2026 has been a generous year for trip-hop releases, but the work of the anonymous project B-Vox — «On the Mist Bridge» — stands apart. This isn't just an album; it's a cinematic passage through the borderland between waking and dream, where every footstep echoes heavily in the damp air.
From the first seconds of the opening instrumental «After Entrance» the conceit is clear: the bridge in the title is a metaphor for crossing over. The beats here aren't broken but flowing, like water under the supports. B-Vox isn't chasing the dancefloor — he's making space. And the space gets populated with characters.
«She Sat There, Crying» and «He Gazed Out Across the Water» form a classic trip-hop diptych — masculine and feminine principles looking in opposite directions but feeling the same loneliness. The voice — when it appears at all — sounds like a whisper through a veil; the drum parts resemble rare drops of rain on rusted railings.
The climax arrives on «Elizabeth's Dark Mountain Gaze», where B-Vox drops the bass deeper and adds industrial textures. It's a moment of recognition: the darkness is looking at you, but you've stopped being afraid. Then comes perhaps the most sinister piece on the record, «Evil watches me — and takes its time», where the beat almost stops, leaving the listener alone with an organ drone and a sense of the inevitable.
Formally, the album is broken into short scenes. «No human soul dwells here» (3:40) is a textbook ambient interlude shot through with wind. «Before the Eighth Day» is the rhythmic heart of the record — finally a groove wakes up, reminiscent of early Massive Attack but stripped of their Bristolian cynicism.
The finale comes in two strikes. «Something happens» (5:14) earns its name: the most epic, hypnotic thing here, with piano loops and treated vocals layered together. And the closing piece, «Sun through the mist», is a single shaft of light in this kingdom of fog. The irony is that the light doesn't dispel the dark — it only emphasises its depth.
The verdict: «On the Mist Bridge» is the rare case of an album that fully delivers on its visual and genre promise. This is music for midnight walks alone with the city, for conversations that will never happen, and for tears no one will see. B-Vox doesn't reinvent trip-hop, but he populates it with new ghosts. Strongly recommended for fans of Portishead, Bowery Electric, and those moments when you just want to disappear.
