Under the Night's Veil
This B-Vox album is honest about itself from the cover onward: muted neon shadows, a bare back in half-light, lettering that looks carved with a blade — visual noir that fully matches the sound inside. Eight compositions and just 38 minutes — a calibrated format: dark jazz lives in short sessions, and the album never abuses the listener's attention, remaining a dense statement with no diluted filler tracks.
The record opens with «Lazy Night Rain» — the tempo of the whole release is already audible in the title: viscous, like rain sliding down a window at four in the morning. This isn't a warm-up intro but an immediate immersion — water, night and the slow breathing of the bass set the coordinates the album never leaves until the end.
«Foreboding» is a premonition-track in the most literal sense; here anxiety steps into the foreground: where the opener was atmosphere, this is where dramaturgy appears — a light suspense without abrupt gestures.
A curious turn is «What's the hold-up?», the album's shortest track (3:44), with an almost conversational, questioning intonation in its title. Against the other slow pieces this is the point where the tension sharpens slightly, without breaking the overall tempo.
«Right Behind Me» (5:43) is the longest piece on the record and, judging by its timing, the culmination point: a paranoid sense of being followed, which sits perfectly within the Bohren aesthetic of slowly approaching menace.
Then comes the semantic pair of «Rain of Love» and «I'll Keep Your Breath»: rain here no longer works as a decoration of anxiety but as a metaphor for closeness, almost intimacy — dark as it may be. «I'll Keep Your Breath» is the most fragile title on the album, and it's fitting that this is the track singled out as a favourite in the player.
Closer to the finale, «When Rain Turns Into Snow» (5:20) is an image of transformation — winter as the natural outcome of the night, the rain and the anxiety that have been accumulating all album long. A beautiful dramaturgical detail: the change of element near the end of the record.
The album closes with «Reading the Future» — not a resolution but rather an ellipsis: divination, uncertainty, a look ahead without an answer. Rain as a through-line image (three tracks out of eight mention it directly) holds the album together as a single whole — this isn't a collection of songs but one long-drawn-out night divided into chapters.
The verdict: «Under the Night's Veil» is a cohesive, disciplined work in the tradition of Bohren & der Club of Gore, where the narrative is built not through lyrics but through a sequence of moods and weather images. For a debut in this genre — a rare maturity of compositional thinking.
